The 95th Academy Awards took place this Sunday, and it’s safe to say that no one got a “slap”. Jimmy Kimmel was the evening host and came right out of the gate with a few jokes about directors and actors. His jokes are what set the mood for the evening. “My favorite duo, Steven Spielberg and Seth Rogen. The Joe and Hunter Biden of Hollywood!” Kimmel said, the crowd laughing almost immediately in response to the joke.
Kimmel extended his congratulations to all the night’s nominees, as well as directors who were there to see if their movies would be taking home any Oscars. Directors ranged from Steven Spielberg to Guillermo Del Toro. After extending his congratulations, he told the audience how the Oscars were “safer” than last year, making an obvious reference to Chris Rock being slapped by Will Smith.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” took over the Oscars by being nominated for 11 Oscars and having seven wins for the night. The film won in the categories of the best picture, best director, and best original screenplay. Following that win “All Quiet on the Western Front” made sure to show themselves with four wins. Michelle Yeoh made history when she won an Oscar for Best actress in a supporting role as the lead actress, she became the first Asian woman in history to ever win an Oscar, “This is proof that dreams … do come true,” she said during her acceptance speech. “And ladies, don’t let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime” Other actresses that were nominated in the same category were Cate Blanchett “Tár,”Ana De Armas “Blonde,” Andrea Riseborough “To Leslie,” and Michelle Williams “The Fabelmans.”
The night took a turn when Jamie Lee was announced as the winner for the category actress in a leading role. Other actresses that were nominated were Angela Bassett “In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” HONG CHAU “The Whale” Kerry Condon “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Stephanie Hsu “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” All actresses are great at their job.
Still, the internet was mainly cheering for Angela Bassett, Angela seemed disappointed because she didn’t win but we all understand because she’s excellent at what she does, and she deserved that award as much as anyone else. We are reminded of that epic line in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, where she says, “Have I not given everything!? Makes one question, what else do Black Women need to do to be recognized in these White spaces?
During the show Micheal B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors gave her a shout-out when they got on stage to present an award, “Hey aunty, we love, mhmm” both said. The internet went into shambles finding out Angela loses over Jamie Lee. A lot of disappointments but there were a lot of positive affirmations were shown to her. Other categories that won an oscar were custom design for Ruth Carter in Black Panther forever, Documentary feature film “Navalny” by Daniel Roher, Odessa Rae, Diane Becker, Melanie Miller and Shane Boris, Documentary short film “The Elephant Whisperers” Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga etc..
With all of the actors winning awards, many were surprised and excited when they saw that Branden Fraser won Best Actor for his role as Charlie in the movie “The Whale” A movie about a morbidly obese recluse English Teacher who tries to reconnect with his daughter. Fraser has been out of the main spotlight for nearly a decade, so seeing him return to the big screen after so long and win an Oscar for it left a lot of people with excitement. Along with actors, many directors snagged Oscars such as legendary filmmaker/director Guillermo Del Toro for his animated film adaptation of Pinnochio.
