Nigeria 1 – 2 Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast won the Africa Cup of Nations for a third time on Sunday by beating Nigeria 2-1 in the final. Ivory Coast is now the fifth nation to win this tournament for a third time.

Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller got the goals for the host nation after William Troost-Ekong had given Nigeria a first-half lead.

The hosts lost two of their group-stage matches, sacked their manager and then pulled off a penalty-shootout victory and a 122nd-minute winner on their way to booking an improbable place in the final. Assistant Coach Emerse Faé has become the first manager to win the Africa Cup of Nations without starting the tournament as head coach of his team.

Nigeria is now tied with Ghana for the dubious honour of most AFCON final defeats. Nigeria came into this match unbeaten in their past 22 AFCON games when scoring first, a streak dating back to 2010.
