Chicago Sky rookie sensation Angel Reese etched her name in the WNBA record books on Sunday as she recorded her 13th consecutive double-double, setting a new league record. Despite her impressive performance, the Sky fell to the Seattle Storm with a final score of 84-71.

Reese’s remarkable achievement surpassed the previous record of 12 consecutive double-doubles held by the legendary Candace Parker, who accomplished the feat during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. With 17 points and 14 rebounds in the game, Reese showcased her versatility and impact on the court.

In a post-game interview, Reese humbly attributed her success to her commitment to consistency and supporting her teammates. She expressed her determination to contribute to her team, regardless of her rookie status. “I think I didn’t do enough tonight, but just being able to be there for my teammates and knowing that I have a job to do every day no matter if I’m a rookie or a vet,” Reese stated.

The head coach of the Chicago Sky, Teresa Weatherspoon, expressed her admiration for Reese’s remarkable achievement. Weatherspoon commented on the dedication and hard work Reese puts into her game, stating, “She might be surprising herself, but she’s not surprising me. It’s something that she can do because it’s something that she puts the work in to be able to do.”

Reese’s exceptional performance goes beyond consecutive double-doubles. She also reached the milestones of 275 points, 225 rebounds, and 30 steals in just 20 games. Only Yolanda Griffith achieved such impressive numbers in fewer games, accomplishing the feat in 19 games during the 1999 season.

In addition to her record-breaking streak, Reese has accumulated a total of 14 double-doubles this season, placing her tied for fifth-most all-time for a rookie. The rookie record for double-doubles in a season is held by Tina Charles with an impressive 22.

Reese expressed her gratitude for being recognized alongside these amazing players and acknowledged the support she has received from her coaches and teammates. She mentioned her desire to continue working hard and striving for success, emphasizing her goal of bringing a championship to Chicago.

The rookie phenom also shared her admiration for Candace Parker, a former player for the Sky who led the team to their first and only championship in 2021. Reese expressed her aspiration to follow in Parker’s footsteps and bring glory to her city.

Reese’s growth throughout the season is evident in her shooting efficiency. Although she faced some struggles earlier in the season, Reese has shot at least 50% from the floor in six of the past 11 games for the Chicago Sky. Her improvement is a testament to her confidence and trust in her training.

Teammate Marina Mabrey praised Reese’s consistency and work ethic, highlighting her physicality and willingness to do the “dirty work” on the court. Mabrey expressed excitement for Reese’s future and the potential she possesses.

Reese’s exceptional performance has not gone unnoticed, as she was named an All-Star alongside fellow rookie Caitlin Clark. The two athletes have been in conversation all season, as their rivalry bled over into the WNBA from their tense NCAA final season.

Reese’s accomplishment comes just a day after Caitlin Clark became the first WNBA rookie to score a triple-double, showcasing how the heat between the two is nowhere near over. However, the rookies will need to overcome their differences soon. The two rookies will join forces on Team WNBA and face off against the U.S. Olympic squad in the upcoming WNBA All-Star Game.

Despite the loss to the Seattle Storm, the Chicago Sky remains in the playoff picture, currently sitting in eighth place in the standings. With Reese’s continued contributions and the team’s determination, they will look to make a strong push in the playoffs.

Angel Reese’s consecutive double-double streak and overall impact on the court have solidified her status as a rising star in the WNBA. As she continues to hone her skills and make a name for herself, fans can expect even greater achievements from this talented rookie in the future.
