Malia Obama makes her Writing Debut with Donald Glovers “Swarm”

Malia Obama, the oldest daughter of former president Barack Obama shocked the world as it seems that her professional career as a writer is starting to come to fruition. Malia recently attended a red-carpet event for Donald Glover’s new series “Swarm” as she was the writer of the 5th episode of the series. This credit is marked as her official debut as a TV writer. The series “Swarm” was already bringing up a lot of attention since it began on March 17 just two weeks ago.

Swarm is a series that follows a disturbed girl who is obsessed with a pop star, she then decides to begin a cross country journey in order to meet up with the star while running into many different people along the way. Some of the guest stars that have gotten this show so much attention includes Billie Eilish and Paris Jackson.

Many Critics who have watched the series have already begun to praise it for surreal and dark storyline, as well as its references to pop star culture.

“Swarm is filled with callbacks to the Beyoncé mythos, many of them hilarious, but its meta-commentary on the nature of fandom is bigger than Queen Bey,” said Janelle Okwodu of Vogue Magazine.

Critics have also been praising it for the Theme of obsession and the power of the internet it brings to the screen.

“The theme that the show tackles feels significant enough to deserve a hearing in this age where people form communities around Internet-connected passions, and Fishback is one of those performers who can keep you riveted without uttering a word,” said Brian Lowry of CNN.

What caught a lot of people’s attention is the supposed new pen name that Malia is going by. As the credits were rolling for episode five, her name was listed as “Malia Ann” Which is her first and middle name however her last name, Obama was not a part of it.

The series showrunner, Janine Nabers was the other writer for episode five which was title “Girl, Bye” and expressed how she liked Malia’s talents.

“Some of her pitches were wild as hell, and they were just so good and so funny,” she said. “She’s an incredible writer. She brought a lot to the table… She’s really, really dedicated to her craft.”

It was first reported that she had joined the project back in 2021 when it went under a different name known as “Hive” she had joined the project after she had just graduated from Harvard and Donald expressed how he felt when working with her and called her a talented person.

“She’s really focused, and she’s working really hard,” he said at the time. “I feel like she’s just somebody who’s going to have really good things coming soon.”
